Computer-on-Modules

Computer-on-Modules, also known as CoMs or SoMs, are small circuit boards that combine all the important functions of a computer. They contain a processor, main memory, various interfaces and expansion options. This allows complex electronic systems to be built very compactly.

Computer-on-Modules standardize the central components and make them independent of the respective application. This allows you to select the right module for your project from a wide range and integrate it into an individual carrier system.

A Computer-on-Modules contain all the components required to function as a fully-fledged computer. The user can concentrate on developing the peripheral components without having to worry about the basic functionalities.

The advantages of Computer-on-Modules at a glance

There are several clear benefits to Computer-on-Modules:

  • Scalability: the modules can be easily adapted to different requirements, giving you flexibility in development.
  • Cost efficiency: Development time and costs can be significantly reduced by using CoMs. This is particularly advantageous in fast-moving industries.
  • Long-term availability: Many of our modules are available for up to 15 years, which is an advantage for long-term projects.
  • Diverse operating systems: Our modules support a wide range of operating systems, including Linux and Android, giving you more freedom in software selection.

Types of Computer-on-Modules

There are modules in various standards such as CoM Express or Qseven. These define mechanical properties, such as size and hole pattern, as well as electrical interfaces. This means that the modules are compatible with each other. Popular processor families are ARM and x86x single board computer.

There are different sizes and pin assignments within the standards. This allows the right properties to be selected for each project.

Application areas for Computer-on-Modules

Computer-on-Modules are used in a wide variety of areas - from industrial systems and medical technology to infotainment systems in cars. Their robustness and long availability make them ideal for long-term use. Their modularity also makes it easy to carry out upgrades and updates.

The most important application areas for Computer-on-Modules in industrial automation are as follows:

  • Industrial automation: our modules are perfect for automating complex industrial processes. They offer the necessary computing power and flexibility for a wide range of applications.
  • Human-Machine Interface (HMI): For applications that require a user interface, our modules offer the necessary performance and flexibility. They are ideal for the development of intuitive and responsive user interfaces.
  • Industrial IoT: Our IoT-enabled modules facilitate the networking and control of devices in industrial environments. They are ideal for collecting and analyzing data in real time.
  • Motor control: Our modules are ideally equipped for precise and efficient motor control. They offer high computing power and special I/O ports for motor control applications.

Our solutions

We offer a wide range of Computer-on-Modules based on various Arm Cortex processors.

The DIMM series offer modules with Arm Cortex-A9 and ARM9 processors, which are particularly suitable for control tasks and applications with high energy efficiency requirements. This series also offers long-term availability, making it ideal for industrial applications.

If you are looking for real-time capabilities, the emSTAMP modules are an excellent choice. This series offers modules with dual Cortex-A7 and Cortex-M4 processors that enable real-time capabilities and low-power operation. The emSTAMP Neon sub-series even offers specialized Cortex-M4 and Cortex-M7 modules that are also optimized for high energy efficiency and real-time capability.

For applications that require high energy efficiency, the emSTAMP Helium module with an Arm Cortex-A5 processor is also very convenient. This module is also available in an extended temperature range, making it ideal for demanding industrial environments.

In addition to the hardware solutions, we support you with in-house Board Support Packages (BSP) and offer optional features such as EtherCAT or PROFINET to meet the specific requirements of certain industrial applications.
