Starting August 1, 2025, binding EU-wide cybersecurity requirements apply to devices with wireless interfaces under the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) and Delegated Regulation (EU) 2022/30. Manufacturers must secure their products against network attacks, data breaches, and fraud. Non-compliant devices risk being banned from the EU market.
Hekatron acted early: Together with emtrion, they achieved a complete and timely implementation of all RED security requirements for the Wi-Fi-enabled product the Genius wireless smoke alarm system, including an audit by a Notified Body.
The relevant standards EN 18031-1 to -3 were published in August 2024 and have since been recognized as harmonized European standards. Manufacturers are required to involve an independent testing body. Affected areas include data protection, access control, update mechanisms and misuse prevention.
emtrion supported Hekatron throughout the entire process, from technical design and integration of critical security features to successful certification. Time is of the essence: Estimates suggest that up to 50% of manufacturers missed the deadline, facing serious risks to their revenue and market access. With the Genius Port, Hekatron demonstrates that security and smart functionality can go hand in hand.
emtrion also supports other companies with practical, efficient, and standards-compliant technical assessments of their products, ensuring future-proof and legally compliant product development.
And this is just the beginning: Starting December 2027, the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) will introduce even more obligations, including security by design, long-term updates, and full manufacturer responsibility across the entire product lifecycle.
